64. Friskney to Butterwick

Thursday 26th October 2006

Drove to Butterwick just north of Boston and got the bus up to Friskney getting off by the church. Walked past the village stores and turned right down Yawling Gate Road (GR462552). Carried straight on at junction with Howgarth Lane to reach the main road (Low Road) at T-junction near an isolated farmhouse (GR460540). Turn right and at junction with A52 turn left. After about half a mile the A52 turns sharp left – turn right here down a no-through road next to a boarded-up pillbox (GR460529).

The road turns sharp left towards the farm and in a few yards turn right between the house and the farm buildings. To follow a track across a field. At a fork in the track turn left towards East Toft Farm which is set in a group of trees. The farm seems to consist of a single corrugated iron barn containing logs. Carry on the track parallel to some power lines and heading towards the embankment than can now be seen in the distance. Reach the first embankment (GR463514) and turn left passing two fields on the right to reach a concrete track (GR467521) and turn right towards a small building and a bridge over The Delph (this diversion was necessary to reach a bridge across The Delph).

Turn right over the bridge and head for the pumping station at The Horseshoe (GR468509) along a high embankment. Continue over a stile and along the embankment. On the right are the usual large fields but there are actually some cattle here rather than the normal crops. On the left is marshland leading up to another embankment closer to The Wash. After a third gate and stile and at a footpath sign take the right-hand embankment (GR459501). At a path intersection keep straight ahead along the embankment and reach the road at Sailor’s Home (GR446492).

The embankment continues to the left of the house and soon turns left towards The Wash. Reach the main embankment and turn right and soon get the proper view of The Wash. Follow the embankment for a couple of easy miles on good grassy surfaces. At a line of trees turn right up a signposted footpath through the trees and at a T-junction of paths turn left. After a couple of hundred yards turn right on a track across a field to reach a road at a T-junction (GR406447). Continue on the road ahead (Sea Lane) to reach the Five Bells at Butterwick. Claims to be open all day but is still advertising Euro 2004 and it is now late 2006 – pub shut.
